From the time when great artists like
Larry Norman and Randy Stonehill first came on to the scene, Contemporary
Gospel
or Contemporary Christian music has come through many changes and still thrives
as a true music style today because of some of the pioneers of the sound. Through
the course of time the leaders have taken on some off the wall and out of the
norm personas that have brought the fans back for more on a constant basis.
You will find some great Contemporary Christian reviews here from this point onward. Remembering the times past that "Jesus Rock" as it has been labeled by some, there have been some wonderful moments. Keith Green sang from the soul, while at the same time, the Imperials gave us pop laden hymns and the Rez Band were giving heavy metal bands a run for their money. At the same time Amy Grant sold the world on her amazing voice with My Father's Eyes. So many have come along the path and led the hearts of many who longed for incredible music, but wanted it to show their faith. Michael W. Smith and Petra showed the world that pop and rock music could both have a soulful message rather than the "mainstream" sound and still be incredible. Steve Taylor comes on the scene as CCM's first real alternative rocker in the 80s blending hip hop and punk with current, topical and even humorous lyrical messages. From his first E.P. (I want to be a clone) he showed the music community there was an alternative. Bands like the Newsboys, Avalon, The 77's, and onward, Contemporary Christian Music may have made some line up changes, but many of the same names have also carried on with the hearts and ears of the devoted listener. Here Rikks Revues hopes to bring some unsigned CCM artists to your attention through reviews, while at the same time bring you up to date on some of the old faithfuls that have new music for review, and the wonderful new world of CCM that is in so many young upstarts signed to the labels today. CD reviews from some of your old favorites, and some that you haven't met yet. From CCM worlds of Pop, Rock, Metal, Southern Gospel, and off the wall, I hope to have a true representation of CCM reviews here for even the most finicky of listeners.
