  Randall Cousins

Randall Cousins on the Purple Plateau

I will say this, a shock to the system as I put the new CD by Canadian Randall Cousins in the CD player. At first I was expecting a country disk, as that is the normal outlet for Cousins, although it did have a strange title. On further investigation I found that this was by no means a country CD, but that happened to be a good thing this time around. An experimental electronic time travel into the unknown that could as easily be a Sci-Fi soundtrack as a musical experience.

With that said, I must say that for the style and sound, this CD is actually one of the better CDs of it's kind I have heard. No vocals, but many different "sounds" captured and ;layered together that I would expect to hear on the CBC's television show ZED. This is a true mind warp that is not for the fan of the norm, but still a great experiment into the netherworld as any I have heard. You can see yourself being taken to terrestrial plains for certain out of this world as you experience the sound and style of the entire project.

Although it may not have any vocals, the disk still has a continuous sound that takes your mind on a journey far beyond the normal imagination. The flow is evident and actually gives a spectacular feel as you are transported to the inner realms of near madness I was not expecting from Cousins. A wonderful escapist feel that not only holds your imagination, but almost certainly will bring you back for another taboo taste of experimentation. From guitars to synthesized hysteria, and only one bit of vocals that the CD credits were used without permission. A way out there project by Randall Cousins with help from Dick Whithers, Steve Petrie, and Herbie Meeks.

Richard Trible

Richard Trible - Love Sex and Other Messy Things

Richard Trible is one strange cat ! From beginning to end this CD is filled with various voice noises in the background . Trible starts out with "All Along The Watchtower" and ends up with the tune "Muff Dive Girl" . The best thing about this CD is Trible's great sense of humor , and he can keep you laughing throughout. This CD is just a pure and natural riot to listen to.

I would like to call this "novelty music" , but it's really not , it's more like a drunken walk through a moon bounce. There are some pretty much objectionable tunes here , but what comedy album isn't ?  Trible touches on some topics that are questionable at least . Trible's humor is fun , but not for  those who don't want to hear sexual innuendos or profanity .

I know that this CD wouldn't have even been made if it weren't for those elements . Some have said Trible doesn't do the cover songs any justice, I say Trible is having fun , and I am having a scream listening to it . The ability to make people laugh is not an easy task , most can't do it , but Trible pulls it off.

A decade or two ago there was a Canadian band that did stuff along these same lines , in Canada they (McLean & McLean) were dubbed as having Bathroom humor. They knew what they were trying not do , as does Richard Trible . Trible's voice suits what he is trying to pull off here . A polished veteran wouldn't have been so hilarious . Trible takes some liberties on the songs he covers here "All Along The Watchtower" , "Closer(Nine Inch Nails)"  , he even talks his way through Brittney Spears "OOPS , I Did it Again" . A laugh a minute!!

More Strange but True music

The Landrus Project

The Landrus Project - True Colors

After a thorough listening of this CD I found an answer to a question I never thought to ask . What happens when you blend Jazz , hip-hop , funk ., reggae , and soul . You get the Landrus Project (put together by saxophonist Brian Landrus) . The CD is eclectic to say the least featuring some gritty female vocals from Sheherezade Stone . They even added a DJ (Ecto One) who lends his flaming scratch work .

Some of the tunes here could be compared to an updated version of early and mid 70s work by Chicago (Transit Authority) . 18 tracks in all , and they glide through easily , not a difficult listen , The different sounds blend delightfully . I had to however slide it here in the off center category as it as an entity doesn't fit any one genre , that's not all bad though , it makes a bold decision to be what it is , and it works fine . I was simply swept in to the recording by the slick production and smooth arrangement .

The heaviest overtone here is surely Jazz , as Landrus himself used to hold position in a Jazz quartet , it is only fitting .  The sweet melodic soundscapes capture the ear and mind , and take you away to some funky places . The sound styling are reminiscent of Jazz greats of old while remaining at the same time fresh . The Landrus Project has tried some new ideas here , blending some interesting styles , and I am glad to say it WORKS.

From start to finish a mix of musical talent that knows what it means to be a TEAM ! They play very well together . This group of individuals teamed together may very well breathe some life back into a sometimes stale Jazz world . Be on the lookout for them , if they are playing near you , make the trip to check them out , I do not believe you will be disappointed . It's not the quintessential  work in the genre , but for an indie group , they have a lot going for them , and should make some waves .

The Great Kat

The Great Kat - Wagner's War

Well , this definitely fits in the off center category . I must tell you first off , The Great Kat is one of the best , speediest , and spellbinding axe grinders in the music scene today . Spin magazine declares the Great Kat "The speediest , scariest shredders of all time."

I personally was completely warn out after this CD . That's a lot to say after about 11 minutes of ....ummm... I dunno , music ? The Great Kat is a violin virtuoso  who graduated the esteemed Juilliard school of music , but instead of  becoming a concert violinist , she decided to become  The Great Kat , wear camouflage , bikinis , and spit blood at the audience . I don't think Juilliard had that in mind , but the Great Kat pulls it off .

This chick can shred with the very best of them , I hear her , and would love to hear her and Yngwie Malmsteen in a guitar wars . The shrieking vocals , screamed obscenities and  screams of war and death may shock some listeners , but if you are looking for a short trip in the warped mind of Katherine Thomas who has played violin at Carnegie hall , then transformed into the dominatrix vamp known today as the great Kat , get this EP .

You may not appreciate the war and death imageries , but you will be blown away by the speed this female shredder plays the guitar and violin on Wagner's War .... I was just disappointed there wasn't a lot more by the self proclaimed "New Beethoven of the 21st century" than the mere 11 minutes 10 seconds of sheer heart attack shredding .

For the hyper arrangements of Wagner's "The Ride of The Valkyries" and Liszt's "Hungarian Rhapsody #2" as well as Kat's originals , 7 songs ranging from 1 minute 7 seconds to the lengthy 2 minutes 11 seconds , this is a hyper speed trek into the next dimension . Enjoy !! If you dare.....

Norine Braun

Norine Braun - Now and Zen

Every so often an artist comes around with a CD that is impossible to classify. Such is the case with British Columbia, Canada's Norine Braun. Making her mark in the Canadian college music scene setting herself firmly in rotations from
Nova Scotia to British Columbia, and now setting her sights on the USA with favorable response from a number of markets there as well.

A strange and diverse mix of music styles with more twists and turns than an abandoned back country road. Never knowing where she will turn next as each track borrows from a number of genres. From the pop sounds of "Jade", the adult alternative "Now And Zen", the rap attempt of "Intimate Hour", the french intro and spoken word verses of "J'en Suis Desolee", the punk, almost early Blondie sounding "I'm The One" make this CD an almost surreal experience.

Completely written by Braun, showing her musical knowledge and diversity as each track sounds as comfortable as the next. Drawing from punk, classical, new wave, hip hop, and industrial there are almost no boundaries she is not willing to cross. The final result is a strange, yet almost appealing attempt to remain un-classified, and she does do just that here. Now And Zen has a strange ability to sound comfortable in all aspects, with sounds emulating Enya, Sarah
McLaughlin, Debbie Harry and far, far beyond.

Though Norine Braun can hold her own in any one of the musical variations at a time, the end product here may find itself lost on some listeners just not knowing what to expect. A trip to say the very least transferring a listener to
a wide spectrum of styles while never being completely sure where the CD will head next. I think the disk will remain a college radio favorite, the mainstream may not be quite ready for the likes of Norine Braun yet.
