Buddy Jewell - Times Like These CD Review

On the first season  of the USA Networks Nashville Star series the world was introduced to a secret that seemed to kept from the Country Music fans. For years Buddy Jewell was plugging away in Music City recording other peoples songs for demo recordings. The secret was let out on the first episode of Nashville Star, and after a successful self titled CD (released as a result of winning Nashville Star) Buddy Jewell brings more of the same back at us again. If you haven't heard of Buddy Jewell, read on, this Arkansas boy has made it to the big time, and it's time you knew the secret too, it would be naive of us to think that everyone has heard of this new rising star even after his Gold Record for "Buddy Jewell".

Buddy Jewell's delivery is phenomenal, and that could be an understatement. A silky smooth delivery that is pure country, with one difference, no noticeable "Twang". Buddy Jewell delivers up Country Music the way it was supposed to be, solid, honest, and with a lot of heart. You can hear the past of Country Music flowing through Buddy's voice like a gentle mountain stream, while remaining current enough to convert some newcomers to the Country Music arena as well. There aren't many artists performing today that sound as if they have staying power to remain on top of the Country Music game, but Buddy Jewell has that rare quality that shines through with amazing clarity.

Although a very good CD, there don't seem to be as many tracks that identify Buddy Jewell's true soul as there were on his last record, there are no "Help Pour Out The Rain" or "Sweet Southern Comfort" singles here. Though the disc does contain some great tracks, and about half of which could be huge radio hits. Even though Times Like These may not seem to be as heart-felt in places, it still stands up as one of the top releases in Country Music so far in 2005. Buddy Jewell shows that he isn't ready to give up his place in Country Music, and with a delivery and style like this, Buddy Jewell should be around the Country scene for a long time to come. 

If you do know the history of Buddy's music and have heard the music (no longer available) he put out independently, you may wonder why there aren't more tracks written by Jewell here. The fact of the matter is, Buddy Jewell can write a heck of a song, both music and lyrics, but what this shows to me is that as an artist, Buddy Jewell knows how to pick other songs to fit his amazing style, songs that seem as though they were written for him personally. There are no tracks that seem awkward in the mix here, they all sound completely like they belong. From the current single "If She Were Any Other Woman" to the Jewell original "Addicted to the Rain" or the more light hearted "Glad I'm Gone", Buddy Jewell shows he is in Country Music for the long haul with "Times Like These".
