Walt Wilkins - Mustang Island

Wow! This guy certainly is a shit-kickin' country troubadour, it wouldn't be a stretch at all to mention Walt Wilkins in the same sentence as Pat Green or even Waylon. As a matter of fact, Walt Wilkins co-wrote the Pat Green song "We've all Got Our Reasons" (Included on Mustang Island). Though he may be writin' his songs in Nashville these days it is not hard to hear, and feel Texas flowing through your speakers as you play Mustang Island over and over, and you will!

The single "I Chose This Road" is a great example of the wondrous songwriting flowing from Walt Wilkins, but it is not the best song on the new effort. One of the greatest songs included is not even his own, the reworking of Michael Nesmith's "Grand Ennui" is simply inspired. The melodramatic "Someone Somewhere Tonight" is one of the better songs in story-teller fashion that I've heard, you can feel the spirit of Townes Van Zandt in the intense mood here.

"Wrapped" co-written by Pat Green is another one of the straight forward gems included, and is where the name of the CD comes from.... "I might stand out in the wind, out on Mustang Island". So, Walt Wilkins has already proven himself as one of Texas' more prolific songwriters, and now on the new CD, there are going to be many more followers, the success of Pat Green can't hurt, but Mustang Island stands as strong on it's own as any CD I've listened to this year. Pay close attention to the superb "If It Weren't For You", the music and lyrics here are mesmerizing.

 If you are a follower of the Texas music scene, no doubt you've heard the name of Walt Wilkins before, and you will be hearing it more often with this spectacular release. Besides Pat Green, Walt Wilkins also co-wrote some tracks with Jamie Richards, Davis Rains and others. This is one of the better CDs that has crossed my desk in 2004, and I am grateful that I get to help introduce it to you, buy this NOW, period!
